In the paper bag production process, adhesive for paper bag machines may seem like an insignificant auxiliary material, yet it directly determines the bonding strength, appearance texture and service life of paper bags. It is also a key factor affecting production efficiency and reducing material loss. Whether for fully automatic high-speed paper bag machines or semi-automatic production lines, the selection, debugging and standardized application of adhesive are closely related to the qualification rate of finished paper bags and stable equipment operation.

Hot melt adhesive is the mainstream option for fully automatic paper bag machines, especially suitable for high-speed production lines. Its core advantages are fast curing speed and high bonding strength, which can perfectly adapt to the production rhythm of dozens to hundreds of paper bags per minute without long pressing and waiting, greatly improving production efficiency.

According to different bonding parts of paper bags, hot melt adhesives are divided into side bonding adhesive and handle bonding adhesive, with different requirements in performance and heating temperature.

For example, the heating temperature of hot melt adhesive for side bonding is usually between 120℃ and 180℃, which should be adjusted according to the parameter requirements of adhesive manufacturers to avoid poor bonding effect caused by improper temperature. Excessively high temperature will make the adhesive too thin with insufficient viscosity; excessively low temperature will make the adhesive too thick to fully penetrate, resulting in granular adhesion and sealing wrinkling.

In addition, the viscosity of hot melt adhesive needs to match the speed of the paper bag machine. The viscosity of common models is between 2000–3000cps (160℃–180℃). Excessively high viscosity easily causes uneven gluing, while excessively low viscosity leads to glue overflow and contamination on the paper bag surface.

Hot melt adhesive is suitable for common paper bag base materials such as kraft paper and white cardboard, especially for food packaging, gift packaging and other scenarios requiring high bonding strength. Some high-quality hot melt adhesives comply with U.S. FDA food-grade certification and domestic technical requirements for environmental labeling products, and can be directly used in the production of food-contact paper bags.

2. Water-Based Adhesive: The Quality Choice for Environmental Protection and Durability

Water-based adhesive takes water as the solvent, featuring environmental friendliness, odorlessness and strong bonding durability. It conforms to the current Dual Carbon strategy and environmental protection policies, being the preferred adhesive for low VOCs emission production.

Its core features include resistance to debonding after lamination, flexible adhesive film and excellent high and low temperature resistance. After being baked at 60℃ for 72 hours or frozen at -10℃ for 72 hours, the bonded paper bags can still maintain stable bonding strength without debonding or brittle adhesive film.

Water-based adhesive is applicable to side and bottom bonding, especially suitable for paper bag production with high environmental requirements, such as supermarket shopping bags and pharmaceutical packaging paper bags. It also fits low-speed paper bag machines or manual auxiliary production scenarios.

During use, the gluing amount of water-based adhesive should be adjusted according to the water absorption speed of paper. Appropriately reduce the gluing amount for paper with slow water absorption to avoid overflow. Part of water-based adhesive can be diluted with an appropriate amount of water (water addition controlled at 2%–10%), but it must be stirred evenly. Do not add a large amount of water arbitrarily, otherwise the bonding strength will be affected.

In addition, water-based adhesive should be stored in a sealed condition to prevent skinning. Ensure the rubber roller of the paper bag machine is clean before use, and never mix it with other types of adhesives.

3. Key Points for Adhesive Selection

  1. Match Equipment Type

    Prioritize hot melt adhesive for fully automatic high-speed paper bag machines to ensure the curing speed synchronizes with the machine speed; adopt water-based adhesive for semi-automatic equipment or manual production lines to balance environmental protection and bonding stability. The fully automatic paper bag machine production line adopts a water & hot melt integrated solution, combining the advantages of both to guarantee bonding speed and improve bonding firmness.

  2. Adapt to Paper Bag Materials

    For smooth surface base materials such as laminated paper and UV coated paper, select hot melt adhesive or special high-adhesion adhesive to avoid weak bonding and debonding; conventional water-based adhesive is sufficient for ordinary kraft paper and white cardboard.

  3. Meet Environmental Protection Requirements

    With the tightening of VOCs governance policies, choose adhesives with low VOCs content that comply with GB 33372 Limit of Volatile Organic Compound Content in Adhesives. If all adhesives used in production are low-VOCs products (VOCs content less than 10%), there is no need to build additional terminal treatment facilities, reducing environmental protection investment costs.
